COVID-19 Response to BAME families in Newport Wales, United Kingdom
The aim of the project is to provide food hampers to BAME vulnerable struggling families during
covid-19 pandemic while combating child and holiday hunger. The first phase of the project was
funded by Newport city council and more than 300 families benefitted.
The second phase of the project was funded by BAWSO who are overseeing and delivering funds
through a new grants programme on behalf of Comic Relief and the National Emergencies Trust.
Here, 400 BAME families from Newport will benefit through the provision of cultural appropriate
food items.
WHAT WE DO
WE link the communities of Newport, Wales UK & Mufakose, Harare, Zimbabwe, through exchange visit programmes and using sport as a vehicle for social & economical change.
In Newport, you can get involved by joining one of our many sports sessions at name of leisure centre6pm to 8pm every Tuesday & Thursdays. Come along to our family fun day out events during the months of May, June and October. Or join us in the during summer, every Friday between 4pm and 6pm.
We deliver fortnightly food hampers after request.
You can join our volunteer scheme which sees youth from Newport visit Mufakose and youth from Mufakose visit Newport on cultural exchange visits.
Our aim is to support health communities in Wales and Zimbabwe. We do this through establishing food banks, local environmental action and youth work provision in both Newport and Mufakose.
Our work building transferable skills among unemployed youth reduces anti-social behavior; empowering, giving advice on volunteering opportunities and providing informal education to young people on global issues through our activities, events and international youth visits.
We support the rebuilding, maintaining and repairing of community centres across Mufakose. Paying the school fees for struggling primary and secondary students and source appropriate educational books from Newport, for donation to Mufakose schools.
